Here are the most obvious ways we can catch the Hepatitis C virus, it has to do with anything close to blood as it is a blood-born virus. It is usually caught though blood to blood contact.
- Shared personal items such as razors, toothbrushes or even nail clipper
- Shared needles wether in a clinical setting or with recreational drugs (in Egypt in the 60s, vaccination was the reason why many got hepatitis C)
- No precaution taken when getting a tattoo or body piercing
These three are less likely but nevertheless possible way to get Hepatitis C:
Other less obvious ways to get Hepatitis C
- When taking care of someone when you yourself has a wound. Examples: an ambulance man with some cuts on his hands is moving someone who’s been wounded in an accident, or in a war situation carrying your wounded mate. The Hepatitis C virus survives in dried blood for several weeks.
- When having sex, usually when blood is present.
- Blood transfusion or organ transplant – especially in the UK prior to 1992
- When getting dental work done
- Nail salons when clippers etc are not cleaned in between clients
Precautions are necessary even after treatment
It is possible to get the virus again after treatment therefore take precautions to avoid getting the virus again.
