The different types of tests for hepatitis C virus

• Hepatitis C Antibody Test, HCV Ab, Anti-HCV Test or Viral Hepatitis C Antibody Screen (ELISA) are the same. Also called a “qualitative antibody” test. A positive result means you have had the virus in the past or you have it in the present. You will usually be guided to do a qualitative virus test to see if you have it in your blood now.
• HCV-RNA or PCR QUALITATIVE, or Hepatitis C Viral Load Test are the same also known as a qualitative virus test. A positive results means you have the virus in the present.
• HCV RNA RTPCR QUANTITATIVE is a test that measure the quantity of the virus in the blood. It shows how active and how far the virus has evolved.
• Hepatitis C Virus Genotype Test is to determine the strand of the virus you have or which genotype.
• ALT – stands for alanine transaminase. It is part of the general liver function test. If high, it means there is an issue with the liver but the cause is not necessarily Hepatitis C. Very often this routine test show something is going on with the liver and can be the first step to discovering the presence of the hepatitis C virus.
